It’s been about two weeks since I participated in an online Mackmyra tasting and that was good fun. It was more or less an introduction to the brand where we tasted the single malts from the signature range, a single malt from the Moments range, but also this Mackmyra Jaktlycka that I will be reviewing today.

To be honest, I wasn’t very familiar with Mackmyra. I have tasted a few but they can be counted on one hand and the only one I have reviewed so far was the Skördetid, which, like the Jaktlycka, comes from the Seasonal range.

A rather innovative series that releases a limited edition twice a year. For example, during spring we had Mackmyra Grönt Te, a single malt that was finished in Oloroso casks and seasoned with Green tea leaves and now we have the Jacktlycka (Swedish for happy hunting), the second release of this year, which was finished in not the most obvious wine casks that should ensure that the whisky should generate an autumnal feeling, including the flavours of all kinds of forest fruits.

This Mackmyra has matured in Lingonberry & Blueberry Swedish wine casks and is bottled at 46.1% ABV.

Mackmyra Jaktlycka tasting notes:

Nose: quite towards the blueberries, sweet cherries but also red berries. A little weird on the nose, something I can’t completely define… Ahh now I know, it’s a hint of orchids. But there’s also resin. There’s oak too and nutmeg. And later vanilla custard appears.

Taste: more of the berries but it’s also quite creamy. Some caramel in the background and a bit of vanilla custard again. Oak here as well and resin. Later it gets a kick of spices, black pepper and nutmeg.

Finish: mid-long and the same spices that can be found on the palate. Also a hint of the berries again. Dry and there’s a slightly sour note.

The nose is fine, and the taste too in the beginning, but then the spices and oak take over quite. It’s getting pretty hot and kind of reminds me of those fireball candies from the past if you know what I mean. Not bad at all, but not excellent either.
