After a lovely walk this afternoon, I’m about to start with an online course from the @edinburghwhiskyacademy . They asked me if I wanted to do the Introduction to Whisky course and share my findings. That sounded like a great idea, especially now I can’t travel to Scotland myself, where I normally learn a lot from visiting distilleries. So I thought this would be a nice replacement for now as this allows me to retrieve my knowledge and/or refresh my memory a bit. The online course consists of 8 modules and is intended for everyone who wants to know more about whisky. It would be suitable from the novice whisky drinker to the connoisseur. I’m very curious what it will bring me! 😊

Besides buying most of my whisky online, I also like to visit some local liquor stores. The nice thing about it is that you can still find something that has already been sold out at many other liquor stores. Sometimes you can really come across surprises, like this Balblair 2006. A single cask release that was bottled in 2018. I have already taken a sip (I was just too curious) and that was very promising! So I think a full review will follow soon. 😁⁠⠀

I think the Springbank 10 is one of the better entry-level bottles out there. I saw that it was on sale at my local liquor store and since I haven't tasted it in a long time, I decided to buy a bottle. It actually surprised me again how good it is! Definitely great value for money, especially when it's on sale. 😉⁠

This Clynelish 2010 is one of the Reserve Casks series, which is a relatively new addition to the Single Malts of Scotland range. All these single malts are a marriage of 4 to 6 casks, all of which are selected by Oliver Chilton (business manager and whisky maker at Elixir). Everything within these Reserve Cask series is bottled at a strength of 48%. This Clynelish consists of 5 casks. Here are my tasting notes:⁠⠀
Nose: Oh this is lovely! Peaches, tinned apricots and oranges. Some vanilla. A hint of carbon. Green bananas. Icing sugar combined with lemon juice. Limestone. Unripe pears too.⁠⠀

Taste: it’s less sweet than the nose suggests. A nice thick mouthfeel. Peaches again at first, which is followed by a waxy note. Minerals. Vanilla. A hint of cookie dough and caramel. Later also grapefruit and a hint of oranges.⁠⠀

Finish: a long finish with mostly minerals and grapefruit. White pepper.⁠⠀

Absolutely lovely and in no way boring. Great mouthfeel and I love how this develops. It’s maybe not as waxy as you would expect from a Clynelish, but hey who’s complaining here. Good price (about €60), good selection of casks and the 48% ABV is totally working here. Really nice. ⁠⠀

This weekend I had my first non-virtual tasting of the year. And that was so nice. Only now do I realize how much I had missed this! ⁠⠀

It was family tasting and this time the theme was Ardbeg, as you can see. Maybe a little weird line-up to have on a very hot summer day, but this tasting should have taken place in early March. ⁠⠀

The funny thing was that the lightest of the three, the lightly peated Blasda, turned out to be the most popular one. Something I was sure of wouldn't be the case on a colder day in March, especially because there were a few avid peat lovers present!😁⁠⠀

Nevertheless, we all enjoyed the tasting again and that is what it is all about in the end. I can't wait for the next tasting! ⁠⠀

The Ardbeg Wee Beastie is the latest addition to the Ardbeg and I think they did a great job there. I think this is better than the An Oa. This speaks more to me. The peat is present here, but not in an aggressive overwhelming manner. Which gives it room to other elements, such as that wonderful freshness, which is interspersed with a nice sweetness. A lovely summer dram, but it’s certainly not a beast. Also nice to see an age statement on the label. Here are my tasting notes:⠀
Nose: there is some peat, of course. Plenty of lemons, that gives is a lovely fresh element. Somewhat salty. A hint of rubber, which disappears after a while. And some resin here, also a floral note in the background. Later some vanilla and black pepper.⠀

Taste: peat too, but it is well integrated. It’s there, but not in your face or anything like aggressive. There is a lovely freshness to it, just as in the nose. Mint. Somewhat salty here too. And a very nice sweet layer. It’s oily. Somewhat ashy and black pepper.⠀

Finish: mid-long. Fresh and minty. Oily. Black pepper and salty caramel.⠀

The postman has just delivered this good looking Glen Elgin from Adelphi. It has matured in a refill sherry cask for 14 years, but the colour almost makes you think it was a 1st fill sherry cask. 😆 Love the colour of this one and I can't wait to taste it! So expect a review soon. ⁠
