Something old and rare on the menu today. Namely a 36-year-old Glenury Royal. Perhaps not the most well-known name, but that's not surprising since the distillery has been closed since the mid-1980s. Besides that, only a few single malts have been released.⁠
⁠
I will tell more about it in my review, which I will post soon. But first, let's start with the most essential part, tasting it and writing down my notes. 😊🥃⁠

The Springbank Society bottlings are currently the only bottles I still order in the UK. The whole hassle with the Brexit rules doesn’t sit well with me, and I think many Europeans would agree. Since the UK left the EU, things have changed about shipping: VAT is charged later, which isn’t a big deal, but the extra costs for import duties can be pretty high.⁠
⁠
You usually only pay import duties for amounts above €150, but alcohol is an exception. Besides the import duties, you also pay an amount to DHL (in this case), which dares to charge a mere 2% administration fee, with a minimum of €14.50 (excluding VAT). Add to that the price of whisky has risen anyway, and you can imagine that it has become an expensive affair these days.⁠

Yep, it hasn’t been as much fun anymore. Reason enough for me to avoid ordering whisky from UK-based stores, but I still like to make an exception with the Springbank Society bottles. I know I’m paying too much, but for me, it’s just too good to let it go. I love the distillery very dearly, so curiosity wins over the wallet. That’s why I still sign up for the ballot once or twice a year, and I happened to be lucky this time. So let’s see what this Longrow 20 year old has in store. It better be good! 😉⁠

Nose: a nice layer of vegetal peat, which is followed by fresh lemon juice and vanilla custard. Red apples and unripe pears. Then minerals and a note of hay in the very back. Later also marzipan and a hint of mint.⁠
⁠
Taste: a rather creamy mouthfeel and there is less peat than the nose suggests. It’s super fruity, with notes of pears, Galia melon, and kiwi. A hint of lemon juice and there is some vanilla custard as well.⁠

Finish: long with a subtle note of black pepper. Lemon juice and vanilla custard again.⁠

This one lands pretty softly. The peat is quite present in the nose, but it becomes much more fruity on the palate, which drives the peat to the background. And this layer of peat has almost disappeared in the finish even. Not a whisky to drink fast as you will miss a lot of those lovely flavours. Sit down, take your time, and you will discover what this Longrow has in store. A beautiful dram!⁠

This Glen Elgin 2008 comes from a series of Elixir

This Glen Elgin 2008 comes from a series of Elixir Distillers I have reviewed before, namely the Reserve Cask Series, a range released under the Single Malts of Scotland label.⁠

These small-batch releases are quite affordable, and the ones I’ve tasted were of excellent quality, too—reason enough for me to buy something from the Reserve Cask Series regularly. The previous two, a Clynelish 2010 and an Orkney 2007, were both €60, if I’m not mistaken, and that’s what I also paid for this Glen Elgin. Not too bad, right?⁠

NOSE: yellow apples and pears. Honey and a hint of powdered sugar. Then vanilla custard, a lovely waxy note. Later also lemons.⁠

TASTE: green apples and unripe pears. Lemons. Creamy vanilla custard. A light floral note. This is followed by a touch of pink grapefruit and a little bit of white pepper.⁠

FINISH: mid-long. Lemons and pears. Vanilla custard. A touch of pink grapefruit here as well. White pepper.⁠

And that’s another lovely release in the Reserve Cask series. I really like this Glen Elgin, and for €60 it’s definitely worth the money. Not very complex, but just very tasty!⁠

The @mactallawhisky series of Morrison Scotch Whis

The @mactallawhisky series of Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers is still relatively new. But the range of Islay single malts has since grown to 4 different editions, namely the Terra, Mara (which I have reviewed before), Strata, and the most recent addition: a limited edition that has matured in red wine casks. However, today we will focus solely on the Mac-Talla Strata.⁠
⁠
There are some differences compared to the other two in the standard range, as the Strata is the only one with an age statement. It is, in fact, 15 years old and, therefore, (well, probably) significantly older than Mara and Terra. In addition, it’s not fully matured in bourbon casks but also contains about 10% – 15% from Oloroso casks. I’m very curious how this compares to the Mac-Talla Mara. So let’s see what this one has to offer.⁠

⁠NOSE: a nice bonfire smoke. A touch of brine and seaweed, but also a hint of seashells. This is followed by a light citrus note. Later also blueberries and a drop of acacia honey.⁠
⁠
TASTE: a rather creamy mouthfeel, which goes towards creme brulee and milk chocolate at first. Then bonfire smoke again. A salty note. Honey and that very same citrus note but more into the back. It’s a little herbal too, reminding me of thyme.⁠
⁠
FINISH: lingering with warming spices such as black pepper and nutmeg. The bonfire smoke is here as well, but also that herbal note with a bit of thyme and licorice.⁠
⁠
Tasty is the word that first comes to mind. It is less rough than Mara and creamier too. There is some lovely sherry influence, nothing too much, but well balanced with the bourbon casks. The creamy mouthfeel finishes it off nicely—all in all, a rather pleasant Islay single malt.⁠

Ahh, the Gathering; no words can describe how I feel. Three very long days, from early mornings to long nights, but it was over before I knew it (time flies when you're having fun). I am grateful to be a part of this fantastic festival, and I wouldn't want to miss it for the world! I may be biased, but for me, this is really the best whisky festival there is. I tasted some excellent whiskies, but maybe the best part was catching up with old friends and meeting new friends! ⁠

I didn't take many photos (and they aren't pretty either😆). I was just too busy. But here is a small impression of the weekend, including the whisky dinner.

A while ago I reviewed two Ardnamurchans, including this AD/10.21:06. This was the last edition in a series of five. ⁠
⁠
And just Like the previous editions, this Ardnamurchan matured in 65% ex-bourbon casks and 35% ex-sherry casks before being bottled at 48.6% ABV.⁠
⁠
NOSE: a hint of burnt rubber at first. Then a whiff of smoke and a lovely salty sea breeze. Oranges and peaches, but also pears. Then a citrus note, which is followed by caramel.⁠
⁠
TASTE: a hint of smoke, mixed with sea salt. Lime and oranges. Pears, but also apples this time. Then I get a hint of minerals. It is slightly oaky which brings out black pepper and cinnamon.⁠
⁠
FINISH: mid-long to long with pepper, cinnamon, but also peaches and a hint of dark chocolate.⁠
⁠
A little different from the previous two editions I tasted, as they both had some berries in them. The sherry influence feels a bit less here and this one also seems to be a bit more fruity than the previous ones. But again quite tasty!⁠
